Introduction:
In this short case study, we will learn how Keitaro, worked with Xcaret Group, an influential tourism group in North America, to create a data catalog to manage and share archival data relating to the company’s resorts and parks. The project aimed to provide a reliable and easily manageable platform that would contain the group’s archive data and provide selective access from any location.
Challenges Faced by Xcaret Group:
Xcaret Group is a leader in sustainable and socially responsible tourist recreation (eco-tourism). The group owns and operates resort hotels and ecological theme parks near Cancun, Mexico. They needed a solution to manage and share their archive data in a secure and selective manner. They required a platform that would enable them to upload historical data collected in the past, no matter the format, as well as the incorporation of new items and new datasets that members with administrator privileges could upload in the future. Furthermore, they needed a solution that would help them to showcase their data and allow potential visitors and other interest groups to find exactly what they need to plan their next holiday.

Keitaro’s well-known expertise in CKAN has enabled us to create a custom data portal for the external and internal use of Xcaret Group’s data. We created a data catalog and a data repository for the group’s employees and all interest groups to manage and share archival data relating to the company’s resorts and parks. Based on CKAN 2.9, the latest and most technologically advanced platform, the solution provided a reliable and easily manageable platform containing the group’s archive data and providing selective access from any location.
The purpose-built data portal enables the upload of historical data collected in the past, no matter the format, as well as the incorporation of new items and new datasets that members with administrator privileges can upload with the future in mind. They are now able to select the dataset that would be available to the public. By showcasing the data portal and allowing potential visitors and other interest groups to find exactly what they need to plan their next holiday.
The solution helped the group securely store all the relevant data with the benefit of it being available from any location worldwide with just a few clicks. Quick access to the desired data is available through a simple search, and the solution implemented is automatically adding tags to new datasets that will be uploaded in the future by employees and administrators.
The look and feel of the portal were adjusted with the client’s specifications in mind to include the group’s branding and a Design Thinking methodology, improving the ease of access and user experience.
Results and Benefits:
After the initial creation of the portal, the team continued to develop, implement, test code changes, and deploy the changes to the hosting provider while also providing complete written documentation for the usage of the platform, which Xcaret’s employees and other interest groups have effectively operated.
